What I Learnt In Losing My Hair

Hair.  It seems so unimportant.  Yet to most of us the idea of losing our hair is terrifying.  Society tells us that luscious thick locks are the aim and for many people, people like me anyway, hair is vital tool for expression and creating your look.

Problem is, people like me also end up treating our hair sort of like a safety blanket.  After years of hiding behind it, my comfort blanket was snatched from me.  Much like I snatched away my daughters dummy, except for me there was no hair fairy leaving treats, just a shit haircut and a breeze around the ears.

So I thought I would share with you guys how I did in fact learn to live without my hair and did not die.

Step One, Despair and Self Loathing.

If you are someone who is attached to their hair I won't lie, there is no saviour.  It is going to be crappy, for the first 6 weeks my fat ass hid indoors with my less than an inch long shaved head.  The picture above was taken two months after the first initial cut.  Give it time, I promise.

Step Two Acceptance.

No I don't mean accepting you had a hair cut. I mean accepting the things you didn't like which caused you to hide behind hair in the first place.  For me it was a hump on my back which I had gained for medical problems (same reason I lost my hair funny enough), weight gain and a fat face.  Sometimes if you don't like something stop hiding it and fix it, and if you can't fix it just bloody accept it.

Step Three, Look on the Bright Side.

My hair wasn't great, I changed it so much I obviously didn't like it...or didn't like me.  Anyway it never solved the problem and left it feeling like crap.  Cutting it all off taught me firstly, I'm really not that ugly and secondly as previously established one does not need to hide under a lions main of extensions.  Not only is short hair time and money saving, but its given me a chance to really embrace it as a fresh start.  Growing out my natural colour and caring for it properly.  I no longer feel the need to dye it constantly and instead plan to take better time nurturing it and making sure I keep it nice.

Step Four, Not Really Giving a Shit.

So I still hate the haircut, I'm not gonna lie, but actually I care less.  I've learnt it's only hair, it doesn't define me as a person.  I don't want to be known as the girl who changed her hair all the time...because lets face it screams I AM INSECURE ABOUT MY IMAGE.  I've also learnt not to take it for granted.  Health is something that I haven't been blessed with at the moment, clearly.  So I suppose what I'm trying to say is own your hair, don't let your hair own you!

Losing my hair meant I had to come out of hiding and accept my flaws and approach self imagine in a different way.  As a result, in a stupid way, I respect myself more and I don't feel as insecure as I used do.

My Bad Younique Experience and 3D Fibre Lashes Review

I feel like before I go ahead and pen this out it needs a disclaimer. Here it is.

I do not have anything against Younique or the people who sell it.  If you make good money this way and have a successful business I wish you the best in the future and hope it does well.  I love the charity work that the company does for abuse victims. The girl who sold me the product is am AMAZING friend of mine who was helpful and lovely through out. This is from my own personal experience and everyone's will differ.  This review is not a positive one,  In fact its pretty scathing.

I was so excited to try this product.  I brought it from a friend at a Younique make up party hosted by her where she could show and demonstrate all the different products.  It retails at £24 and is purchasable from local reps.  I had seen many amazing pictures of this being used and couldn't wait to get those results for myself.

As soon as I got home I rushed into the bathroom to try it on.  I was quite impressed.  Although my lashes didn't look as long as those in the pictures they were much thicker and fuller.  I found it was hard to put on but thought it would just take more practice.  overall, first impressions were SO good.

That didn't last long I am sad to say. I really desperately wanted to love this. I went to back to rep to tell her i was having increasing issues as every time i used this the fibres would fall into my eyes, it was actually quite painful.

At this point I should probably explain quickly how this differs from usual mascara.  This contains two tubes.  One is a mascara like black gel, and the other is a bottle of teeny tiny dusty fluff like fibers.  When used together they bond to attach to your lashes to create a false lash look.

the 3D fibres that make this product different from others.

She advised me to tap of the excess fibres and roll the brush on the back of my hand to squish them into the brush before applying as this would help. It did... a bit,  Part of me is thinking "WHY are these instructions not on the bloody box?!"

Also this dried up very quickly, and when I asked on a facebook group full of reps they all basically tried selling me "rose water" to add to it to keep it fresh.  I paid a fair amount for the mascara already...I don't think so loves!

I wasn't very happy with the way I was spoken to in the group when I brought up these problems.  "the product MUST be fake" and "You are applying it wrong" was not what I expected when I reached out.  There was complete denial that I just might not be liking the product...naturally I am an idiot who doesn't know how to apply mascara or something,

I really didn't want to tell my friend I was kind of hating the product as I didn't want her to feel like I wasn't supporting her.  I would just like to add that my friend is a complete doll and was not offended at all by the way,

This where my problem lies with some reps though.  Some girls will take it offensively and personally if you say you don't like to product,  Because so many people, or their friends are trying to push these products I feel like there are SO many amazing reviews that aren't sincere and after some deep searching I did find out I am not alone in hating this product.

This is where it got real bad

Seeing as I didn't have any other Mascara, and not a lot of cash, I decided to keep using it and try to get used to it.  Long story short, some of the fibres got into my eye and badly scratched my cornea, I got conjunctivitis and had to have drops.  I was in pain for over a weak and couldn't wear eye make up.  Greaaat.  Trying to explain this to my Dr was just golden, I think he thought I was crazy and out write asked me why I was putting fluff near my eye and said "this sounds like a bad idea, I don't understand girls and these beauty treatments"

So at this point I complain directly to the company telling them what happened and that I would possibly like my money back, They made it quite difficult, I didn't want to keep pestering my friend for an order number and In short didn't get my money back.

I asked them how they felt about the general safety of the product seeing as its very common for the fibres to fall into the eyes upon use, and the fact that it had hurt my eye...There was no comment, just sort of an "it is safe because its had tests" kind of thing. Paraphrasing of course.

I don't see how having TINY BITS OF FLUFF falling into your eyes every morning can be regarded as safe but what ever who am I to know?

In my Opinion this is quite an expensive product, It was quite time consuming to apply, Very uncomfortable to apply and made applying my make up a complete chore, it took the fun out of it completely.  I felt like I got better results from cheaper high street brand mascaras.

I have never hated a make up product more in my entire life. Not only would I not recommend, I would advice against it.

Urban Decay NAKED Smokey Eye Palette Review

The Urban Decay pallets have a mixed review of being both amazing and over rated.  I must admit I never found the original palettes interesting enough to justify spending out on a neutral set of colours but when I found out they were releasing a smokey set I really wanted it.

I tend to wear a smokey eye as my day to day look, I love quite dark striking colours so I need something with a lot of colour pay off which this has.  I love the way these blend so well and are very easy to use, there is a good range of both matte and shimmery shades in both warm and cool tones.

I really love the brush that comes with this, the larger end is soft and good for applying colour to a large area and blending it perfectly, the smaller end is better for the inner corners and applying a concentrated amount of colour to a smaller space.

Standard colour swatches, although you can hardly see the lighter shades on my pale skin, they are fantastic little colours for highlighters.

I love how easy the colours go on, the staying power is really good and even on the days I can't be bothered to use primer they still stay very much in place

In my opinion this is the best of the Naked series so far!

Batiste Dry Shampoo XXL Volume

I am a person who is big on hair, that's no secret.  I am quite often dying my hair colours that require less washing,   I have also noticed washing my hair a little less has helped with its growth lately as I got in a bad habit of washing it everyday.  But obviously I don't want to be walking around with dirty looking hair.

Batiste shampoo is a product I have been using for quite a while now and is well over a glowing review.  I have tried cheaper alternative brands but nothing works quite as well as this one.

Although this isn't the best smelling one of the bunch (hello tropical) It really is a product that does what it says on the tin.  I find it hard to come across volumising products that really work but this one holds all promises.  It always leaves my hair feeling thick, fresh and bouncy throughout the day.

With dry shampoos I know white residue is often something that can be a worry but with this, as you can see on my black hair that is no issue.

So if you are someone who wants to wash their hair a little less, Is short on time or want to protect hair colour I would recommend this product.  I sometimes even use it on clean hair just for added volume!

Maybeline Coverstick Concealer Review

Lately I'm on the search for that perfect concealer, I suffer from dark under eyes from you know, being tired with two kids and being terrible about drinking enough water, So I picked up this little concealer stick from the beauty isle in my local Tesco for £3.99

I have only been able to find the second lightest shade, usually I would pick the lightest but this fits my pale skin quite well and gives that contoured highlighter effect look too.

As you can see it gives a good on my skin, who knew having freckles would come in handy like that?  I have been applying it over my foundation and blending it with a foundation brush and going over it with a light setting powder, over all I had happy with how it looks.  So this all sounds quite positive so far right?

There is just one HUGE MAJOR issue that ensures I will not be buying this product again.

It feels like applying a thin coat of play-dough do your face.

It is very thick.  I don't think of my skin as being oily but this really made it feel caked on to the point where it was uncomfortable. Not only did it feel heavy on my face but it was oily to touch and made my face feel almost sweaty.  It isn't even summer yet and I really hate to think what even a small amount of this product will feel like in the summer.  On the plus side it is water proof and I can believe that as it feels very plasticy!

In conclusion I couldn't wait to get in the bath and wash this mess off my face.  This isn't a product I would personally recommend despite being well priced and actually doing the job i just feel like the texture is a complete deal breaker for me!

Got a concealer you love? let me know I could really do with some help!
